Think we solved this - its not memory - 1GB memory on the VM made no difference.
It is the size of the records being got - over 100 fields and 4000 + bytes per record. If we ask for fewer fields its not surprisingly an awful lot faster. In others experience ADO is comparable in speed to other methods of loading data? John
