Welcome to the best Delphi list around! I've been here, as many
others have, since Delphi first came out, even though I didn't get serious
about programming until around version 4! Like yourself I had a very hard
time finding good resources back then, and sometimes still do. Never having
taken any computer science or programming classes made it even tougher to
get started, but the people on this list are great and won't go out of their
way to make you fell like an idiot when you ask a dumb question. Many other
list and news groups won't tolerate beginners and can be quite vocal in
their responses to newbies! And don't forget the companion List,
"Delphi-Talk" which you can register for just as you did for the
"Delphi-List". The Delphi-List...this one...is moderated and all questions
and discussions must be absolutely Delphi related. The Delphi-talk list
however cuts a little slack and allows for broader subject matter and
long-term discussions.
As to your current needs, Yes, mastering Delphi 7 is a great book if
you can get it. I don't know if you can order from amazon.com down there
but they have it a very good price, and many time can even find you a used
copy at a quarter or less than the original price! Also I would suggest the
following books: "Delphi in a Nutshell" "Object Pascal from Square One",
"The Tao of Objects", "Code Complete", and if you can find a copy, "Writing
Custom Delphi 3 Components" by Ray Knopka of "Raize Components for Delphi".
This last one hasn't been updated since Delphi 3 but 99% of it is still
pertinent to the topics covered, and you won't find a better way to learn
about components anywhere else!
Online you should visit www.delphi.about.com where you will find
good tutorials on many Delphi subjects as well as some components and lot's
of example programs w/source, www.delphibasics.co.uk/index.html which as its
name implies offers basic instruction in all areas of Delphi programming,
www.delphi-central.com which also has a lot of different tutorials,
www.delphiforfun.com again with a lot of technical examples mostly in the
math and graphics areas, and last but not least, www.drbob42.com with more
advanced topics having to do with ASP, NET, etc., and written by one of our
members.
These sites should keep you busy for awhile! HTH's!

Subject: Help for a total Newbie: Where to start?

Hi to all. I'm pretty new (not to say totally new) to Delphi and Pascal.
I've been looking around the web but I don't seem to be able to find a good,
simple but complete guide for learning Delphi. I have only found some old
guides (And with old I mean "Learn Delphi 1"). Could anybody give me some
advice? I'm really motivated. By the way, I've read about the book
"Mastering Delphi 7" and I've read good reviews, but as I live in South
America, it's hard for me to get that kind of books, so that's why I prefer
online resources. Any help will be appreciated...
Thanks!
