OK - decided the simplest route was to download the Dec 2007 ISO image.
Mounted it and did a Modify.  Now back to a near running system.  Now
downloading the May Help update.  Just have to add my additional companents
and I sholud be back to where I was.

Or first try to delete the "disabled packages" key.
