I'm not Berend  but here is my 2.5c anyway.

MySql is not free except in very limited situations.  If you are using it for a 
desktop app, you will need to purchase a license unless the app is gpl'ed.

MS Sql Express is very good if you can live within the limitations.  It is 
robust and can handle quite large numbers of users.  You can download free 
tools from Microsoft that are mostly acceptable.

I haven't played much with Firebird yet.  My main beef was case sensitivity so 
I ended up using a Brazilian collations. The ability to use an embedded 
database enginge and later swat to c/s could be useful.  I must look at it 
again someday.
