ah, time for the post of shame
As it turns out I was using a third party unarchiving utility called "The
Unarchiver", which automatically inserted symlinks to half of the libraries.
When untarred using tar -vjf, the archive is intact. I imagine that the
program behaved in this fashion in order to save space by symlinking identical
files. I was not able to find a config setting that relates to that behavior,
though.
Apologies to all for taking up time on a PEBCAK issue.
