I've done this now. Once you have created a fret diagram you can use the
View->Palettes->Create Button for Object command to make a button that
will insert the object at the cursor. 

This can be used for lots of other things too. Even if you have no idea
how someone created some fancy text mark thing you can just make a
button for plugging it into future scores...
