Looking into this a bit deeper I see that this is implemented - but it is buried away and wrapped in MIDI jargon (the MIDI instrument is a "program" in MIDI-speak, and you will find a command to change the program in the Object Menu ▶ Directives ▶ Playback ▶ MIDI menu). To make this a bit more user-friendly I've added this command to that menu: Command: Change Timbre (Instrument Sound) Changes the MIDI instrument for the following notes, optionally typesetting some text here. Use for pizz. trem. etc. Location: Object Menu ▶ Directives ▶ Playback ▶ MIDI Internal Name: ChangeTimbre What I haven't done is to program looking up your installed soundfont to help you find the appropriate program number: you can do this by this rigmarole (if you don't have a GM manual): Use the command: Command: Built-in Staff Properties Change the built-in properties of the current staff Location: Object Menu ▶ Staffs/Voices ▶ Staff Properties Internal Name: StaffProperties and select the MIDI tab and look in the Instrument list for your chosen instrument (e.g tremolo strings) and set that. Then run the command again and look at the number that has now been assigned to Program. This is the number you need to set in the command to switch instrument sound.
