The more I think about this, the less I think it's a denyhosts problem
instead of an issue with your sshd. I'd re-test that sshd is correctly
reading /etc/hosts.deny the same way you did before.
I was beginning to think the same thing. My own office IP # is in
hosts.deny, so a few minutes ago I rem'd it out of hosts.allow, and
tried to login. The connection attempt timed out. So I unrem'd it and
was able to get in. Checking the logs then showed this:
Jan 26 09:12:59 sp1 sshd[5787]: refused connect from 66.114.67.18
(66.114.67.18)
So it works except when it doesn't work! If the original offending IP #
is in hosts.deny, why was it allowed to attempt 4940 times? Or even one
for that matter?
Any pointers on where I can read up and see what I am missing in my sshd
config?
