I decided to try switching to monitoring secure.log instead of asl.log while waiting for a reply to my previous message. The only other change that I made was to remove the Mac OS X custom regex specification (http://denyhosts.sourceforge.net/mac_os_10_4.txt) from denyhosts.cfg Now the hosts.deny file has been successfully populated with the IP addresses. Maybe I can leave this configuration intact for a while to see if it proves effective.
