You either wait until an intruder is catched or do your own test, in both cases
after you see "denyhosts: [user.info] Added the following hosts to
/etc/hosts.deny - 157.100.192.98 (unknown)" (just an example) then you'll see
the email being sent.

If it's not sent, then look at /var/log/denyhosts (or wherever you configured it
is); if there was an error it should be described there.

No.  And you don't want to, usually there are hundreds of additions by the sync.
