I haven't used the MacPorts version, but I maintain the fink version (at http://finkproject.org/). It also requires a certain amount of not-so-well-documented set-up, but at least you know where to complain (to me!). ... also, I'd be happy to give you a copy of my .cfg file which I know to work. In fact, I can give that to you now if you'd like; contact me off-list. You could probably use it, with some modification, in your existing MacPorts installation by changing the directory names as needed. In the meantime, I'll keep poking around to see if I can help with your present question.
