It is not necessary to run the J2ME JVM to build JSR-169 support into Derby. Only the J2ME/JSR-169 classes are necessary in order to build, so its just a matter of assigning the jsr169compile.classpath variable to the location of the jar file(s) with those classes. (see section 3.2 in BUILDING) I know the IBMers are using the jar files from WCTME. I haven't seen how the JSR-169 classes are packaged in Sun's J2ME reference implementation, but it would be nice if BUILDING.txt had appropriate instructions to set up the build using either Sun's or IBM's packaging. andrew
