windows allows one to partition in software, I think included in the base OS. Can someone say if linux does or not (or at least a particular
version of linux).

Well, Linux has an extremely powerful component called the Logical
Volume Manager, which sounds like what you mean:

This has been widely available in Linux distributions for at
least 5 years or so.
