There is no problem with DerbyJUnitTest its behaving perfectly fine ie returning networked connection in case of framework is set to DerbyNet and EmbeddedConnection other wise. Problem is in jdbc4 test suite configuration. It shouldn't try to set the framework to DerbyNet when its testing embedded features. Once this is fixed there won't be any need to change the behavior of DerbyJUnitTest. I can open a jira issue to fix this and extend the scope to merge embedded-only with it.
