Ugly? Maybe a little worn around edges, but not decrepit. Mostly just outdated, but not incorrect. Your update to STATUS is certainly an improvement, though. :-)

To be fair, at the time those words were written, 10.1.2.x was in the works. And, currently, anyone stlll working(?) with a 10.2.0.0 version of Derby is (still?) dealing with alpha code. Outdated? Sure. Incorrect? Nah. Showstopper? Definitely not. cheers, andrew p.s. final thought - it *would* be nice to have STATUS updated before rolling the distributions so that downstream consumers can have an idea of where Derby, as a project, was going at the moment when the distributions were rolled. And might be going, future directions (hopefully) being represented, etc., etc...
