I have not yet had a chance to look at the patch, but I ran those two
queries--along with all of the queries posted in your Feb 17 comment--against
DB2 v8. From what I can tell, the (clean) Derby trunk and DB2 v8 agree in all
of these cases--i.e. they either both throw an error or they return the same
results (with the notable exception of the NPE that this issue is trying to
fix). Not sure if that's helpful or not...
