I was recently discussing UNICODEMGR implementation with some engineers working
on other database products. The topic of the encoding for embedded character
data in PRDDTA and CRRTKN came up. The fields themselves are architected in
DRDA as BYTSTRDR - Byte String, but do contain character data. The question
was whether the character data should be UNICODE if UNICODEMGR was being used
or should remain EBCDIC. I was asked how it will be in Derby's implemenation.
I think it should be UNICODE. It just makes more sense (to me) and is how the
current code will work, but should be limited to single byte characters. Let
me know if you have a different opinion or better ideas.
