Thanks Scott, That's what I thought. I know I can work around that way but was surprised to encounter the syntax error in the first place.
Actually its hibernate's DerbyDialect (the one mentioned in their JIRA) that is largely based on DB2 that generated the sql. I here getting hibernate/Derby support is something plenty of folks are chasing at the moment. I wanted to get a gauge on how close that is. And if this Upper issue has been addressed in a newer dialect? I would do this Select Upper(username) USERNM >From users Order By USERNM If you want to maintain case you would have to do: Select Upper(username) USERNM, username USERNAME >From users Order By USERNM Use the one field to sort and the other field that maintains case Scott Rosenbaum -----Original Message----- From: Jim Murphy [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, January 27, 2005 8:03 AM To: 'Derby Discussion' Subject: Question about UPPER/UCASE Should this work, assuming a user table with the right shape? select username from users order by upper(username) I get syntax error @ "upper" Regards, Jim Murphy Mindreef, Inc.
