That's what I thought.  I know I can work around that way but was surprised
to encounter the syntax error in the first place.

Actually its hibernate's DerbyDialect (the one mentioned in their JIRA) that
is largely based on DB2 that generated the sql.  I here getting
hibernate/Derby support is something plenty of folks are chasing at the
moment.  I wanted to get a gauge on how close that is.  And if this Upper
issue has been addressed in a newer dialect?

I would do this

Select Upper(username) USERNM
>From users
Order By USERNM

If you want to maintain case you would have to do:
Select Upper(username) USERNM,
          username USERNAME
>From users
Order By USERNM

Use the one field to sort and the other field that maintains case
