Sorry, i don't know the HIG, where can i find it? I like the click and hold idea, but it's not obvious, i guess you could put a little notification of this the first time you open the color picker to avoid this. I still don't like the idea much, i think it would feel a bit weird that a click and hold opens a dialog box.
