Is it even possible to have icons in the Unity menus? (Sorry, I don't use
Unity.)

I honestly don't think that icons will make menus more or less usable.

The human brain can interpret known symbols faster than it can read text,
as icons are more easily recognizable than text (there's more variety in
shape and color).
Try turning on icons in menus and then use the Insert menu.
