Aaron asked me to provide feedback on the volunteer form. I also looked
at how the How to Help page links to it.*

Re https://snowdrift.coop/p/snowdrift/w/en/how-to-help :*

"Register as a Volunteer" is more a way of finding out about ways to
help than a way to help in itself. As such, I found its position quite
far down the page a little confusing, and insufficiently prominent. I'd
move it at the top of the page and retitle it as follows:

Tell us about your interests and skills

    [cartoon]

Although not a requirement, if you tell us about your interests and
skills, we can direct you to where you can make the biggest
difference. *Once you have registered as a user on the site, fill
    out our volunteer interest form
    <https://snowdrift.coop/p/snowdrift/volunteer>*.

        Participate in the community

Come say "œhi", talk with others, ask questions, test things...

    ...etc...

*Re https://snowdrift.coop/p/snowdrift/volunteer :*

The alignment of the introductory text seems odd. I'd left-align it
with the form labels. Perhaps this will automatically be addressed when
the new site styles are applied to this page?

I'd also change the introductory text. Since the user may well have
come from the How-to-help page, I wouldn't start out by suggesting they
go there instead of here. Also, "To express interest in volunteering,
fill out this form" suggests this form is the only way to express
interest in volunteering. I'd reword the introductory section as follows:

Filling out this form is not required, but it's a great way to get
started volunteering. Telling us about your interests and skills
will enable us to direct you to where you can make the biggest
    difference.

Also see the How-to-help page for information about our current needs.

/*Name or Internet Handle:*/ How about changing to "Name and/or Internet
Handle" to invite people to provide both if they want?

/*Relevant work/training/volunteer experience:*/ Ambiguity about what
level of detail is expected here may trigger hesitation possibly
resulting in procrastinating completing the form. It might help to add
some text below the heading such as:

    *Relevant work/training/volunteer experience:*
Feel free to either briefly summarize relevant aspects of your
experience, or to provide more detail, for example by copying and
    pasting sections from your resume.

/*Areas of interest:*/ This should be checkboxes, arranged in multiple
columns, so you can see the whole set at once and don't need the fiddly
and error-prone "use ctrl to select multiple" approach that a list box
requires, along with the inability to see exactly what you've selected
if the listbox has a scrollbar, as it does here.

I'd also add an "Other:" checkbox with a text field so people can add
something they don't see listed.

It would be nice to have a pre-checked checkbox labelled "Email me a
copy of my information" if this can reasonably easily be done.

Before the Submit button I'd say something brief to set expectations
about what will happen next, e.g. should the person expect to hear from
somebody within X days?

After submitting it, the user should see a dedicated page or message
thanking them for their interest and for taking the time to fill out the
form. It should also say something about what will happen next and
provide one or a few suggestions for how they could engage with
Snowdrift.coop in the meantime, e.g. parts of the site to explore.
Merely redisplaying the blank form with "application submitted" at the
top is a bit offputting and disappointing - as well as potentially
confusing if you don't notice the message at the top - and it
misrepresents the nature of what the user just did since it's not an
"application".

Best regards,

Michael
