Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/30785

Affects: gnome-applets (Ubuntu)
       Severity: Normal
       Priority: (none set)
         Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Monitoring things like the battery through ACPI seems to fail entirely
in certain model laptops, including the Gateway Solo 5300. This was the
machine that it was tested on, but it is reported that this problem
occurs in a number of other laptops of different makes and models.

PRIMARY EXAMPLE:
In /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state (analyzed using cat) the status of the battery
does not change from its initial reading (at boot), apart from whether it is
charging or discharging. It does, however, read the correct charge at boot. It
just never changes.

Naturally, this causes all battery monitoring programs to fail,
including the GNOME "battstat" battery monitoring applet.
