Sitsofe,

That was it.  It was me not  waiting long enough.   While technically not a
bug, it is very unusual to see an application window and no data (for like
20-40 seconds).  It sure would be great to see some kind of "working"
message.

I ran the command you gave me and there were no error messages.  The
response was lots of info and then "Dumped 49 devices..."


Re:  Your comment to Chip.  There is some kind of disconnect between this
program and other parts of the OS.  For example, this information is
recorded in /var/log/dmesg

"[4294667.605000] CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.60GHz stepping 02"

but in the device manager, it lists "unknown" as the processor manufacurer
and type.
