After reporting this bug, I used Evolution to check my email. I noticed that the Exchange portion of my mail (which I use to check into work email) wasn't being displayed. So after typing evolution --force- shutdown from the terminal and logging out / in again, the applets load without problem. So it seems that the problems are related to Evolution or one of the supporting packages. Will see about closing this bug and reopening on the troublesome Evolution-related package.
