Comment: My three eurocents - I remember having the identical issue while running Gnome 2.10 or 2.12 under Apple's X11 server under Mac OS X, only there theme got corrupted immediately, because I had Polish keyboard layout set by default (in OS X WindowServer and X11 and OS X layouts are 'synchronized'). I reproduced it while ago under fresh Dapper (PPC).
