Oddly enough it was a hardware issue involving my motherboard. I tried to install windows with the same problem. Some odd error caused the system to go into hibernate over and over again. Amazingly you could still operate within Ubuntu if you can get past the annoying error messages, you can't fix the issue in Windows (but I'm sure that doesn't surprise you)
