I'm seeing something similar, I think, in gutsy. After recent xorg updates, I can't login with any user via either GDM or KDM, except the two failsafe options. I enter the user/pass, and get just the busy cursor. If I login to the failsafe terminal, I can run kdestart or whatever and that works. In my .xsession-errors file, I see a lot of references as follows:
[debug log] max lines = 1000 Checking for nVidia: present. Starting Xgl with options: -accel xv:fbo -accel glx:pbuffer -nolisten tcp -fullscreen -br +xinerama *** stack smashing detected ***: Xgl terminated xmodmap: unable to open display ':1' xsetroot: unable to open display ':1' xset: unable to open display ":1" xset: unable to open display ":1" xsetroot: unable to open display ':1' startkde: Starting up... ksplash: cannot connect to X server :1 xprop: unable to open display ':1' usage: xprop [-options ...] [[format [dformat]] atom] ... GDM logs don't show anything unusual, nor does the messages file. It should also be noted that I do not have desktop effects enabled. Nor am I using compiz/beryl. -- gdm hangs before login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/113067 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
