Sorry for lack of resp - was without www for a few weeks. Problem is still there with the latest updates of Gutsy (completely up to date and synch) despite upgrading most of the packages involved. Another issue crops up if I do a ctrl-alt backspace X restart - when I logon again (without rebooting the system as a whole) gnome-panel will not appear at all (but the desktop will still be there). Maybe the bug is not exactly nautilus related then?
