Understood that it's not a valid jpeg, but I don't think completely crapping out is the right response from Gimp. Ideally it would say "this does not look like a valid JPEG, but here it is anyway". The KDE apps (gwenview, konqueror, etc) all open it silently, which is perhaps correct given their use cases.
It was sourced from a google image search, and saved by firefox. The file name is jpg online.
