Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center
[Though it's too late to fix this for the Gutsy LiveCD, it would be nice if this worked correctly on Hardy LiveCD] When using the Gutsy LiveCD on my desktop PC (with NVidia GeForce FX 5900ZT) it is practically not possible to enable the desktop effects, because the NVidia driver requires a reboot to work. Per default, the nv driver is used (according to xorg.conf and displayconfig), and desktop effects are disabled. When selecting the "Normal" checkbox to enable effects, I am asked whether I want to install the NVidia driver, and if I click OK, the driver is installed (apparently is installs nvidia-glx-new), and then a dialog appears: "Please run "Apperance/Desktop Effects" again after restarting the computer, when the new graphics driver is active.". Also the "Restart" icon appears in the top panel. Now restarting on a LiveCD doesn't really make sense I think... The driver will no longer be installed after the restart - or is there some magic to preserve it? So I think the "right" solution would be to only require the user to re- login to enable the new driver. Alternatively, the desktop effects dialog shouldn't offer to install the nvidia driver at all (because it's useless anyway and might instead confuse the user). ** Affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- For Hardy: enabling desktop effects with NVidia card on LiveCD is impossible https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/158109 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for gnome-control-center in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
