I tried every solution given in the entire internet for the bug -- none worked.
Until I edited xorg.conf directly to reflect the real situation I had:

Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
Driver "kbd"
Option "CoreKeyboard"
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "us_intl"

No idea why...
