This has been fixed. I don't know what why the settings changed, but
GNOME had a "generic" model and X had a "pc105" model. What I did was
run:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

When asked about the keyboard layout, I typed in "generic" to make X
consistent with GNOME.

The error does not come up any more.
