I will try the shortcut to get into a console window. no way of
telnet/sshing into the "box" though.

however, i have managed to try again and wait. at some point it did
switch off, and i managed to switch on and return from hibernate. very
very messy and slow,  I will try again after running another update of
Hardy today, and report back.

Seeing as there are numerous topics about suspend/hibernate issues in
the forums, I would assume that there's generally still lots of things
wrong with acpi/powermanagement mechanisms in ubuntu, which I think
should've been fixed 2 or 3 releases ago ;-) else nobody having those
problems will seriously abandon his/her windoze partition (including
me).
