Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I disabled Xgl by creating the file "~/.config/xserver-xgl/disable".
After restarting X, I got a lot of error messages such as:

The panel encountered a problem while loading
"OAFIID:GNOME_MixerApplet". Do you want to delete the applet from your
configuration?

The applets in question did not load. The error boxes would close
spontaneously if not clicked, and often would not respond to interaction
with the mouse anyway. The problem resolved by re-enabling Xgl.

If the offending applets (mixer, tomboy notes, trashcan etc) were
removed from the panel there were no errors. Trying to add them back
onto the panel reproduced the error messages.

My box is an AMD64 3800+ with nVidia 6600 graphics (repository nvidia
driver). It has been upgraded all the way from dapper (?breezy) over the
years and has had the various iterations of Xgl/compiz/beryl installed.
I am using metacity as a WM with no desktop effects at present.

I cannot understand why disabling Xgl should affect the loading of
gnome-panel applets.
