Just for your information, I don't (and never had) the CPU spike bug. The disk access one is as old as warty however. But then... stopping HAL does not stop the disk access bug for me on a laptop (running network manager, if that could also be a potential culprit).
I could not figure out the logic for the time intervals between the disk seeks, it's not necessarily every 5 sec, it can be 7, or more, or anything.
