I have tried the method that you stated; It was not .gconf that was
causing the problem, it would seem. I removed .gconf and booted to find
the same problem. I then removed .gnome2 from the home directory to user
the standard config for those files; the issue was rectified.

Unfortunately in the process of doing this, I seem to have deleted the
file indefinitely.
