DOH-- there's ... ah ... a seperate volume control for Rhythmbox, and, um, well ... it has a mute button.
I must have hit some key combination hot-key that sets RB into instant mute, and was so surprised by the effect that I just didn't see the tiny red-bar crossed-out speaker-icon right there on the control panel. Ooops. Mystery solved.
