The problem is you configured compiz to use virtual desktops which is not supported (in hardy we don't allow you to do this).
Install compizconfig-settings-manager, go to System->Preferences->Advanced Desktop Effects Settings, click on General Options, go to the Desktop Size tab, and set Number of Desktops to 1.
