Changing the keyboard layout does work for me as well, using Gutsy (that I believe was upgraded from at least Feisty, so is not a fresh install). I noticed that the "Super is mapped to the Win-keys (default)" claims it's default. The problem, I think, is that "Alt and Meta are on the Alt keys (default)" also claims it is default and is higher in the list of options.
