I can reproduce this bug. Anytime the window manager is switched from
compiz to metacity (or vice versa) and you press a volume key g-s-d will
crash, themes will flicker, and you have to wait about 5 seconds before
volume functionality is restored. From then on you can use the volume
keys freely again, until you decide to switch back to compiz again, at
which point it reoccurs.
