Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Installed XUbuntu 8.04 Alpha 6 from CD. After upgrade can't log to X
Window, GDM login screen shows briefly but then dialog box pops up
stating Greeter appears to be crashin ...,.

Clicking OK only makes it do this repeatedly.

Tried to change gdmgreeter to gdmlogin in files in directory /etc/gdm, no help.
Googling for hints did not turn up usefull stuff,
GtkModulesList=gail:atk-bridge:/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/modules/libdwellmouselistener:/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/modules/libkeymouselistener
is already commented out
[http://liltux.wordpress.com/2007/09/05/how-to-fix-the-error-the-greeter-application-appears-to-be-crashing-in-ubuntu/]

Can't right now provide more exact info, I can no longer log in even
from text mode console.

I tried booting with 2.6.24-11 kernel, booting stops and last line on console is
* Starting system log daemon

Machine is ASUS A7V motherboard, AMD Duron 750 MHz, 384 MB memory, Elsa
Synergy display card, two IDE hard disks.
