Does not look like #201684 , I don't get the busybox prompt.

Might be #201673 but can not check anymore.

Anyway, booted with Live CD cdrom:[Xubuntu 8.04 _Hardy Heron_ - Alpha i386

The display card seemed cause problems. Changing display to anything better
than 800x600 with 8-bit color prevented X from starting.
Otherwise system was usable, but after dist-upgrade things got really messed
up.

I installed this 8.04 to check if my USB WLAN would work with 2.6.24 kernel.
That did work without any extra fiddling after I turned on my wireless access
point.
Now it seems I have to install again, can't do nothing now because can not
login to XUbuntu. Starting with 2.6.24-11 kernel I get:
init: tty1 main process (4229) terminated with status 11
init: tty1 main process ended, respawning
when trying to log in from console.
