As someone noted above this bug is also present when using creative
xmod. It seems to be some kind of race condition, where maybe two pieces
of code try to change volume to the response of changing volume using
the knob or +/- on the keyboard. This is only my guess. Anyway, bug
still exists in Hardy. It is very annoying, because I must use mouse to
change the volume. Even changing the volume using mouse causes a lot of
problems (sometimes I must mute/unmute using the keyboard). So please,
try to investigate this before releasing next Ubuntu. I know that a lot
of people are using external usb audio devices. This is very important
for me. If you need any assistance in hunting this bug just drop me an
email. I'll try to help as best as I can.
