Hmmm.. I can feel I don't like that question... because I can't answer it properly. In Ubuntu I have only seen the "dismount volume" option. I guess that is the one you are thinking about. I must admit that I do/did not always use that option (Ubuntu does not tell me to...). As to the actual case, I do not remember, but I think it would have reached my thoughts if I did not, as a possible explanation for the problem.
Hmm, tell me what would happen if I moved about 50 MB to the USB drive and then unplugged it without dismounting.
