I am seeing this effect when I attempt to open GIMP xcf files from the "Recent Documents" menu.
A dialog pops up and states "Could not open recently used document "file:///home/<me>/Picutures/<file name>.xcf" Such files open OK if opened from Nautilus or the application itself. I've noticed that right-clicking the file reveals a MIME type of image/x-xcf, whereas the .recently-used.xbel file has it as image/xcf (no x-).
