Unfortunately this is not an easy fix.  Currently GPM has no distinction
between the laptop panel and an external display.  So if someone had
their external display go to sleep, we wouldn't know which one to wake
and which one to not.

While I agree that it is good to fix, I don't think it is reasonable to
add during feature freeze as much code (and dependencies) would have to
change.

I would recommend filing a bug upstream (bugzilla.gnome.org) as they're
currently planning for the next version of GNOME.  Please link the bug
here.
