Having failed to re-install Ubuntu 8.04 on my E2160 [A] rig, I then succeeded on my Northwood P4 [B] rig. Re-trying with my [A] rig, it was happy to re-install Ubuntu 7.10 but once again wouldn't take 8.04 (now withx483 updates !) After Updates application and a very slow, reluctant re-start it failed to display normal drive icons and displayed an 'Internal error' 'failed to initialise HAL !' message. Not being a Linux expert I nevertheless tried Justin Clift's entry in Terminal, to no avail. I will now try again, substituting $15hal for S15hal (Don't know what I'm doing but I know that the slightest typo screws up command line instructions.)
