Very similar or same issue -

When I clicked on the switcher in lower corner, it did switch to the
workspace with the application that I just moved there visible.  However
I had no way to get back to my original, there were no panels, no icons
etc., except the background was there.  I am using compiz with cube
effect.  Ctrl-Alt right/left would rotate the cube, but all sides of
cube were blank except for background.  No other keyboard shortcuts
would return to original.  Ctrl-Alt-Del brings up logout choices, which
I canceled and Ctrl-Alt-Bkspc worked to get me out and restart X.
