As stated earlier I did something so that I got shadows and then things started working on the next login. This was the command I ran: gconftool-2 -s --type bool /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager true
However: I had a hard freeze while trying to remove the double calendar in Evolution (or whatever happened), and now the desktop is back to "normal"...
