To back up Michal T - this bug is still present in the latest version of Ubuntu. This effectively means that the default image viewer shipped with Ubuntu isn't able to handle the most common of tasks and, in many cases, isn't really usable.
If the bug was fixed in 2.19.1 in Gutsy, it has since re surfaced.
